Alan started attending in October 2017 after receiving Slimming World vouchers from Achieve Oxfordshire. Now that Alan’s finished his 12-week referral period, we caught up with him to see how he got on.

What made you decide to get some Slimming World vouchers?
My clothes started to feel tight and I didn’t like looking at my reflection in the mirror. Since retiring I had not ridden my bike like I had before. While I was working, I biked 8 miles a day, five days a week, which had an effect on my waistline. After I retired, my waist expanded, and my jeans and trousers were getting tighter and tighter. Also, carrying the extra weight meant that I would fall asleep at the drop of a hat as I felt continually tired. It was then I made a conscious decision to do something about it.
How did you get your Slimming World vouchers?
I had been told that maybe I could be referred through my Health Centre. I contacted the Doctor who told me that there was a scheme that could provide me with Slimming World vouchers. It was highly likely that I would have joined anyway but having the twelve weeks for free initially was a bonus. While I was waiting for my vouchers to arrive I started going to a gym where I could burn off some calories doing activities and swimming.
What was your first meeting like?
When I first joined Slimming World I found my Consultant, Kevin, to be very friendly and helpful. Indeed, the whole group was friendly! They made me feel welcome and continue to do so every week. Kevin went through what Slimming World was all about. It took me a couple of days to get my head around Food Optimising, but having the Food Diary helped for the first four weeks. One thing I would say is that I don’t feel hungry at all which is the main thing for me. With all the recipes that are available there is such a food variety. Plus having taste sessions at group enables one to try other recipes which I find is very helpful.
What have you learned?
At group, you find out that we are all human. Occasionally we will give in to the odd item and then the result shows up on the scales the following week. Not a lot can be done in these circumstances but close the door and move on, and group is great for helping you get back on track.
Where are you on your journey now?
Having so far lost 1st 3lbs, jeans and trousers feel loose on me. I have more energy and don’t feel tired like I used to. I also feel more confident with life in general – especially when I meet a friend who I haven’t seen for some time and they comment saying “Wow! You’ve lost some weight since I last saw you”. This makes me feel good and determined to keep going until I have shed enough stones to reach my target weight. Losing weight has also motivated me to reduce my level of alcohol consumption and to attend the Leisure Centre 3 to 4 times a week.
